EcoTips

Nature is in our hands. Let's learn to respect it!

When we talk about pollution, respecting nature, and quality of life, we often think that each one of us alone cannot do much.

However, most waste and pollution is actually produced by each of us during everyday life.

We don't need to make great sacrifices to behave in a more ecological manner, protect natural resources, and improve the quality of life.

The EcoFamily: recycling!

Recycling domestic waste is one of the most simple and important ways families can actually help protect the environment.

It has been calculated that, on average, a waste bag consists of the following: 27% organic waste; 25% paper; 13% plastic and rubber; 4% metal; 8% glass; 8% wood and rags, and 15% of other waste.

This means that over 80% of domestic waste can be collected separately and recycled.

To recycle waste effectively, it is essential for it to be correctly separated in the household. This can seem a little difficult at first, but it is only a matter of getting used to it and making a little effort at the beginning. It won't take long for it to become a healthy habit that will make us all feel we are doing something good for the environment.

The main advantages of correct recycling are:

  • Reduction of the amount of material taken to the waste dump;
  • Reduction of the amount of virgin material used during manufacturing processes;
  • Protection of resources that otherwise would end up in the waste dump;
  • Recovery of the resources originally used in the manufacturing process (for example, it has been demonstrated that using recycled paper allows saving water and energy compared to the manufacturing process that involves using pure cellulose).

The EcoFamily: everyday habits!

We usually tend to underestimate the impact of our everyday activities on the environment.

But if we stop and think about some of our everyday activities, such as using water, chemicals, the car, creating waste, consuming energy, we realise how they can impact the environment directly or indirectly.

By taking simple measures, we can help protect nature every day; if we all behaved in a more ecological way we would surely be living in a better, greener place.

So let's try to set the example and encourage our family and friends to do the same!

Here are some tips:

Protecting the environment when shopping
By choosing products with low environmental impact you can help spread their use. Companies will be encouraged to produce this kind of products instead of traditional ones:

  • Where available, use products with environmental certifications, such as Ecolabel;
  • Choose products made with recycled materials (paper, beverage cartons, glass, and plastic);
  • Choose products packaged in ecological or easily recyclable materials.

Protecting the environment while washing
A proper use of washing machines and dishwashers can help save energy, water, and waste:

  • Use these appliances only full-load;
  • Dose the detergent according to the level of dirt and water hardness;
  • Use the lowest temperature recommended.
  • Helping protect the environment with proper use of chemicals
    Every day we have to do with chemicals of various natures that, if misused, can cause serious pollution:
  • House chores are sometimes small-scale chemical wars. We often think that 'stronger' products containing toxic, irritating substances, such as ammonia (present in most detergents) are the best solution. Nevertheless, we can get excellent results and ensure the highest levels of hygiene even whilst caring for the environment. What's important is to carefully read the labels, avoiding the most polluting products;
  • Don’t overuse detergents or other chemicals; always use the recommended dose.
  • Choose natural products for personal and home hygiene;
  • In the garden, minimize the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides; all these products pollute aquifers, causing serious damage to our resources. Try to choose always ecological solutions, such as natural fertilizers (e.g., manure) and plant-derived pesticides (for example nettle decoction is great against aphids).

Protecting the environment by changing habits or your lifestyle
There are many everyday activities that can be carried out in a more eco-friendly way.
For example:

  • Use plastic bags several times before using them as garbage bags;
  • Don’t take the lift every time, take the stairs at least on the way down. This will also help you keep fit;
  • Try to take public transport or ride a bicycle;
  • Collect waste separately;
  • Remember to turn the lights and electric appliances off when you don't need them;
  • Don’t throw paper, plastic, chewing gum, and cigarette butts in the street.
